Write a resume that gets shortlisted. Practical tips covering format, experience, skills, and ATS optimization.
Build Your Resume Free →Recruiters spend 6-7 seconds scanning a resume. Keep it concise and relevant. One page for 0-3 years experience, two pages for 3+ years.
Always list your most recent experience first. This is the standard format recruiters expect and ATS systems prefer.
Avoid fancy graphics, tables, and columns that ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) cannot parse. Use simple formatting with clear section headers.
Keep fonts, sizes, and spacing consistent throughout. Use one font family, typically 10-12pt for body text and 14-16pt for your name.
Start each bullet with a strong action verb: Built, Developed, Implemented, Optimized, Led, Reduced. Avoid passive language like "was responsible for".
Numbers stand out. Instead of "improved performance", write "improved API response time by 40% by implementing Redis caching".
Don't just list what you did — explain the result. "Refactored authentication module reducing login time from 3s to 0.8s".
Mention the technologies used in each role. Recruiters search for keywords. "Built REST API using NodeJS, Express, MongoDB, and JWT authentication".
List programming languages, frameworks, databases, and tools separately from soft skills. Be specific: "React, NodeJS, PostgreSQL, Docker, AWS EC2" not just "web development".
Never list a skill you cannot answer basic questions about. If you list MongoDB, be ready to explain aggregation pipelines and indexes.
Customize your skills section for each job. If the JD mentions Kubernetes, add it if you have experience. ATS systems match keywords.
List 2-3 strong projects with GitHub links. Describe what problem it solves, tech stack used, and any interesting challenges you solved.
Add your GitHub profile URL. Make sure your GitHub has pinned repos with READMEs. A good GitHub profile is often better than a degree for developers.
If your CGPA is below 7.5, simply don't mention it. No recruiter will ask why you left it out, but a low CGPA could disqualify you early.
